Why Use Pinyin Slugs for Chinese URLs
A Chinese website needs URLs that work for people and for Baidu. Chinese characters are technically allowed in URLs, but once a link is copied or shared, each character turns into nine characters of code: /百度推广/ becomes /%E7%99%BE%E5%BA%A6%E6%8E%A8%E5%B9%BF/. Random IDs avoid that but say nothing about the page.
Pinyin slugs sit in between: short, plain ASCII, and readable for Chinese users — /baidu-tuiguang/ is immediately recognisable as 百度推广. This generator creates them from your page titles, one at a time or for a whole list of pages at once.
What Makes These Slugs Correct
- Right readings for polyphonic words. Many characters have more than one pronunciation. The generator checks thousands of words first, so 银行 is
yinhang, notyinxing, and 重庆 ischongqing. The Pinyin with tones is shown under each slug, so you can check it. - Words, not single syllables. Chinese has no spaces, so the generator finds word boundaries itself: 百度推广指南 becomes
baidu-tuiguang-zhinanrather thanbai-du-tui-guang-zhi-nan. Prefer one syllable per segment? Switch to "Syllables". - Clean ASCII only. Tones are removed, ü becomes v or u, full-width letters and digits are normalised, punctuation turns into separators, and English words stay as they are, lowercased.
- Ready for bulk work. Paste a whole sitemap's worth of titles. Duplicate slugs are numbered automatically, and a maximum length cuts long slugs at a word boundary.
Words, Syllables or Initials?
- Words —
baidu-tuiguang-zhinan. The most readable option and our recommendation for most sites. - Syllables —
bai-du-tui-guang-zhi-nan. Every syllable separate. Longer, but never groups words wrongly. - Initials —
bdtgzn. Very short, as in many Chinese brand domains, but meaningless to most readers. Use it for short codes rather than article URLs.
How to Use the Pinyin Slug Generator
- Paste your Chinese titles — one per line, up to 200.
- Choose the slug style and separator — words with hyphens is the usual choice.
- Check the Pinyin under each slug, especially for names of people and places.
- Copy a single slug, or all of them at once in the same order as your titles.
Chinese URL Checklist for Baidu
URL decisions are cheap at the start and expensive later. These points keep a Chinese site's URLs clean, stable and easy for Baidu to crawl.
-
Pick one URL scheme and keep it
Pinyin or English, hyphens or not, lowercase — decide once and apply it to the whole site. Mixed schemes look untidy and make URL rules and redirects harder.
-
Keep slugs short and descriptive
Three to five words is usually enough. Leave out filler words and dates that will age, unless the date is part of what the page is about.
-
Keep tracking parameters out of internal links
Baidu picks up URLs with UTM and other tracking parameters even when a canonical tag points to the clean version, creating duplicates. Never use them on internal links, and keep campaign tracking out of Baidu's reach.
-
Don't change live URLs without a 301 redirect
If you move from Chinese-character or ID-based URLs to Pinyin slugs, redirect every old URL to its new one with a permanent 301 redirect, and update internal links and sitemaps.
-
Tell Baidu about new and moved URLs
Submit new URLs and sitemaps through Baidu Search Resource Platform, and use its site revision tool when a whole URL structure changes. Baidu indexing tool → · Baidu and robots.txt →

The slug should reflect the page's main topic and keyword — the same one used in the title. Preview the title on Baidu →

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Both work for Baidu. Pinyin is readable for Chinese users and matches how they think about the page; English suits sites run by international teams or brands with English product names. What matters most is choosing one scheme and using it consistently across the site. Avoid random IDs or long parameter strings where you can.
-
Yes, browsers and Baidu can handle Chinese characters in URLs. But when the link is copied, shared or stored, every Chinese character is percent-encoded into nine characters such as %E7%99%BE. A short Chinese title becomes a long, unreadable link, and some systems handle encoded URLs badly. A Pinyin slug avoids that.
-
No. Tone marks such as ǎ are not plain ASCII and get percent-encoded in URLs, and tone numbers such as bai3du4 are hard to read. URL slugs use toneless Pinyin. This tool strips tones automatically and writes ü as v (lvyou) or u, as you prefer.
-
Hyphens are the most readable choice and the most widely used: baidu-tuiguang. Many Chinese sites write Pinyin without separators (baidutuiguang), which is shorter but harder to read. Underscores work too, but hyphens are the safer default. Whichever you choose, use it everywhere.
-
It uses the same dictionary as our Chinese to Pinyin converter: thousands of words with polyphonic characters are checked first, so 银行 becomes yinhang (not yinxing), 重庆 becomes chongqing and 长沙 becomes changsha. Check the Pinyin shown under each slug before you publish.
-
They are kept and lowercased, so 谷歌SEO优化指南2026 becomes guge-seo-youhua-zhinan-2026. Full-width letters and digits are converted to normal ones, punctuation becomes a separator, and & becomes "and".
-
Yes. Paste up to 200 titles, one per line. Every line gets its own slug and copy button, and "Copy all slugs" copies the whole list in the same order. With "Number duplicate slugs" switched on, repeated slugs get -2, -3 and so on, so every URL stays unique.

The tool is free and needs no sign-up. Your titles are only used to create the slugs and are not stored.
