Baidu Title and Description Length in 2026
We measured Baidu's result pages on desktop (1440px browser window), iPhone (390px screen) and Android (360px screen) in October 2026. Titles always show on one line; descriptions show two or three lines depending on device and image. The character counts below are for Chinese text — Latin letters and digits are narrower, so more of them fit.
| Device | Title (1 line) | Description, no image | Description, with image |
|---|---|---|---|
| Desktop | 608 px · ≈ 33 characters | 2 lines · ≈ 92 characters | 3 lines · ≈ 102 characters |
| iPhone | 356 px · ≈ 19 characters | 3 lines · ≈ 75 characters | 3 lines · ≈ 48 characters |
| Android | 326 px · ≈ 18 characters | 3 lines · ≈ 69 characters | 3 lines · ≈ 45 characters |
On desktop, a publish date in front of the description (such as 2026年9月1日) takes about seven characters of space. The practical rule: put the main keyword and message in the first 18 characters of the title, keep the full title within about 33, and make the first 45 characters of the description count.
How Baidu Cuts Titles Today: Width, Not Bytes
For years, Baidu SEO guides counted title length in bytes: about 60 bytes, or 30 Chinese characters, before Baidu added "...". In the result pages we analysed, that is no longer how most titles are cut. Baidu sends the full title — we saw titles of 50 characters (86 bytes) delivered complete — and the browser cuts it to one line with an ellipsis once it runs out of space.
That has a practical consequence: wide letters run out of space sooner. A Chinese character is always one full character width, but Latin letters vary — W and M are about four times as wide as i or l. A title mixing English brand names and Chinese is cut at a different point than its byte count suggests. The preview calculates this exactly, using Baidu's font sizes and the letter widths of Arial, which Baidu's font stack uses for Latin text on Windows.
Three more things we saw in Baidu's titles:
- Half-width punctuation. Full-width !?:,() in titles were shown as half-width ! ? : , ( ). The preview converts them the same way.
- Occasional server-side cuts. A few titles were shortened by Baidu itself with "...", once even at the start of the title, keeping the part that matched the search.
- Mobile is much shorter. On a phone, only 18 or 19 Chinese characters fit — about half of desktop.
Baidu changes its layout from time to time and may show different versions to different users. If you need the older byte rule, switch the preview to "Cut by bytes (classic)".
Why Baidu Often Ignores Your Meta Description
In our sample, most snippets were not meta descriptions at all, but passages from the page text — sometimes from the middle of an article, starting with a list number. Baidu picks the passage that best matches the search. A meta description still matters, because Baidu uses it when it fits the query, but the first paragraph of your page should work as a summary too.
How to Use This Baidu SERP Preview
- Paste your title and meta description — Chinese, English or mixed.
- Add your site name and target keyword — the keyword is highlighted in red wherever it appears, as on Baidu.
- Check all six snippets — desktop, iPhone and Android, each with and without an image, since Baidu decides when to show one.
- Read the numbers under each device — how much of the available width the title uses, and where title and description are cut.
Baidu Title & Description Checklist
A snippet that is cut in the right place, contains the search term and reads naturally gets more clicks from the same ranking. Check every important page against these points.
-
Front-load the first 18 characters
Mobile shows only 18–19 Chinese characters of a title. Put the main keyword and the reason to click there; brand name and extras go at the end.
-
Use the words people search for
Baidu highlights matching terms in red, which draws the eye. Use the exact Chinese term your audience searches, not a literal translation of your English keyword.
-
Give every page its own title
Duplicate titles make pages compete with each other and look like a template site. Write a unique title and description for each page that should rank.
-
Write the description as a summary, then make the page match it
Aim for 80–90 characters with the key message in the first 45. Because Baidu often uses page text instead, open the page with a paragraph that says the same.
-
Write native Chinese, not translated English
Machine-translated titles are easy to spot and rarely match how people search. Have titles and descriptions written or edited by native Chinese copywriters.
-
Make sure the page can rank at all
Baidu needs to crawl and index the page first: fast hosting for mainland China, no blocked Google resources, mobile adaptation and submitted URLs. Mobile adaptation → · Baidu indexing tool →

Frequently Asked Questions
-
In Baidu's current layout, titles are cut by width on a single line. On desktop, about 33 Chinese characters fit (608 pixels at 18px). On mobile, only about 19 Chinese characters fit on an iPhone and 18 on a typical Android phone. Put your main keyword and message in the first 18 characters, and keep the full title within about 33 characters so it is complete on desktop.
-
On desktop, a description shows two lines without an image (about 92 Chinese characters, fewer when a date is shown) and three lines next to an image (about 102). On mobile, three lines fit about 75 characters on an iPhone and 69 on Android, but only about 48 and 45 next to an image. Put the key message in the first 45 characters and aim for 80 to 90 characters in total.
-
In the Baidu result pages we analysed in October 2026, Baidu sent long titles in full and the browser cut them to one line by width, so a title with wide letters such as W is cut sooner than one with narrow letters. The older rule of thumb counted bytes (about 60 bytes, or 30 Chinese characters). This tool uses the width rule by default and offers the byte rule as an option.
-
In the results we analysed, Baidu displayed full-width punctuation in titles as half-width characters — !?:,() became ! ? : , ( ). Descriptions kept their full-width punctuation. The preview applies the same conversion to titles.
-
Baidu often builds the snippet from the page text instead of the meta description, especially when it finds a passage that matches the search better. In our sample, most descriptions were excerpts from the page body. Write a strong meta description anyway, and make the first paragraph of the page a good summary that includes the main keyword.
-
Not directly. Baidu decides whether to show a thumbnail, and the image changes how much of the description is visible. That is why this tool always shows each device twice: with and without an image.
-
Baidu highlights the words that match the search query in red, in both title and description. Enter your target keyword in the Search keyword field to see which parts of your snippet would be highlighted. Separate several keywords with a space.
