About This Japanese Text Generator

Designers and developers building Japanese websites, apps and localization projects need realistic text to test layouts before the real copy arrives. Latin Lorem Ipsum doesn't help: Japanese uses three scripts at once, has no spaces between words, and follows its own line-breaking rules. This random Japanese text generator produces dummy text (ダミーテキスト) that behaves like real Japanese on screen, so you can check fonts, line height and text flow early.

Generate 1 to 10 paragraphs, choose polite (です・ます) or plain (だ・である) style, and paste the result into Figma, Sketch, your code editor or any CMS — no sign-up required. Rolling out across Asia? Our Chinese and Korean dummy text generators create matching placeholder text, so you can test every language version side by side.

What Makes This Japanese Dummy Text Look Real

  • Three scripts in a natural mix. Kanji for content words, hiragana for particles and endings, and katakana for loanword-like terms — the same visual rhythm as real Japanese.
  • Common characters only. Kanji come from a pool of about 420 of the most frequent characters, so the text renders in every Japanese font, including subsetted web fonts.
  • Real particles and endings. Words are joined by は, が, を, の, に and other particles, and sentences end in typical forms such as -ます, -です, -である or -だ.
  • Japanese punctuation. Full-width 、 and 。 with no spaces between words, so line breaking and kinsoku rules (禁則処理) behave as they will with final copy.

The first paragraph starts with 以下の文章は意味のないダミーテキストです ("The following is meaningless dummy text"), so a Japanese speaker reviewing your mockup knows right away that the copy is not final.

Same Character, Different Shape: Japanese vs Chinese

Japanese and Chinese share thousands of Unicode code points, but each language draws some of them differently. Below are the same five characters, once marked as Japanese and once as Simplified Chinese. Look closely at the strokes:

Japanese · lang="ja" 直骨誤角今 Japanese font
Chinese · lang="zh-CN" 直骨誤角今 Simplified Chinese font

If both rows look identical, your device is missing a Japanese or Chinese font. On a real website, this is why the lang attribute and font stack matter: a China version built on a Japanese template, with lang="ja" or Japanese fonts first in the stack, looks subtly foreign to Chinese readers. And many characters differ entirely — Japanese 関, 経 and 発 are 关, 经 and 发 in Simplified Chinese — so a China version always needs its own translation, not a converted copy.

Japanese Font Test Lines

Need a short line rather than paragraphs? Use the Iroha, the classic Japanese pangram that uses every basic hiragana once, or a test line covering all scripts.

いろはにほへと ちりぬるを わかよたれそ つねならむ うゐのおくやま けふこえて あさきゆめみし ゑひもせす Iroha (いろは歌) — a poem over a thousand years old, using each basic hiragana exactly once.
日本語のフォント見本:漢字・ひらがな・カタカナ ABC abc 0123 Script test line — kanji, hiragana, katakana, Latin letters and digits in one line.

  2. Choose sentences per paragraph — 5, 10, 20 or 30, depending on how much text you need.

Build-Stage Decisions for a Japanese Website — and a China Version

Japanese and Chinese websites look similar to Western eyes, but they need different technical decisions. Getting them right during the build saves a rebuild when the next market comes along.

  1. Set the right lang attribute on every language version

Use lang="ja" on Japanese pages and lang="zh-CN" on Simplified Chinese pages. Browsers use it to pick the right glyph forms and fonts, and search engines use it to understand which audience a page is for.

  2. Use a separate font stack per language

Japanese and Chinese fonts are not interchangeable, and full CJK web fonts weigh several megabytes. Use system fonts (Hiragino, Yu Gothic, Meiryo for Japanese) or subset the web font. Generate a Chinese font stack →

  3. Get Japanese line breaking right

Japanese has no spaces, so never apply word-break: keep-all to it — that rule is for Korean and would stop Japanese lines from wrapping. Use line-break: strict so 。、 and small kana don't start a line.

  4. Use UTF-8 everywhere

Legacy Japanese systems still use Shift_JIS, and Chinese ones use GBK or Big5. Mixing encodings produces garbled text — the Japanese word for it, 文字化け (mojibake), is now used worldwide. Fix garbled Chinese text →

  5. Plan China as its own site, not a translation layer

Google dominates search in Japan, but it is blocked in mainland China, where Baidu leads. Google Fonts, Maps and reCAPTCHA can also slow or break pages there. Plan hosting, scripts and search for China separately. Build-stage checks for Baidu →

  6. Keep staging and placeholder text out of the index

Password-protect or noindex the staging site, and remove every line of dummy text before launch. Indexed placeholder text is meaningless content, and an indexed staging copy competes with the live site.

We run our own teams in China, backed by our Baidu ranking factors studies and the book SEO for China. For other markets, we introduce clients to independent specialists from our partner network and keep keywords, reporting and launch dates aligned with China.

Frequently Asked Questions

Japanese Lorem Ipsum is random Japanese placeholder text (ダミーテキスト) used in design and development to fill space before real content is ready. Like the Latin Lorem Ipsum, it gives Japanese-language layouts a realistic look without carrying any meaning. The text mixes real kanji, hiragana and katakana with Japanese punctuation, but the words themselves are random.
Use the generator at the top of this page: choose the number of paragraphs (1, 3, 5 or 10), the sentences per paragraph (5, 10, 20 or 30) and a writing style, then click Generate. The random Japanese text appears below the form, ready to copy and paste.
It looks like Japanese but means nothing. Words are built from about 420 frequent kanji and random katakana, joined by real hiragana particles such as は, が, を and の, and sentences end in typical endings such as -ます, -です or -である. A Japanese reader immediately sees it is nonsense, which is exactly what placeholder text should be.
Japanese and Chinese share many Unicode code points (Han unification), but each language draws some characters differently. Browsers choose the glyph style from the page's lang attribute and the font. A Japanese page marked lang="ja" shows Japanese forms; the same characters on a page marked lang="zh-CN" with a Chinese font show Chinese forms. A wrong lang attribute makes text look subtly foreign to native readers.
No. Japanese and Chinese are different languages that share some characters. Many Japanese kanji have different forms in Simplified Chinese (関 and 关, 経 and 经, 発 and 发), and the grammar, vocabulary and kana are entirely Japanese. A Chinese version needs professional translation, Chinese fonts and lang="zh-CN" — and for mainland China, a search strategy for Baidu instead of Google.
The classic Japanese pangram is the Iroha (いろは歌), a poem over a thousand years old that uses each basic hiragana exactly once. It is on this page with a copy button, together with a short test line that covers kanji, hiragana, katakana, Latin letters and digits.
Only if search engines index it. Remove all placeholder text before launch, and keep staging sites out of the index with password protection or a noindex directive. Indexed dummy text is meaningless content, and an indexed staging copy competes with the live site.
Yes. It is free to use with no sign-up, registration or account required. Generate as much random Japanese dummy text as you need.
