Paid Social in China: How Douyin, Rednote and WeChat Ads Work

Ad products, account requirements for foreign companies, costs, compliance and the account foundations that decide whether ads perform — explained without hype.

By the Jademond Digital team. Jademond Digital runs paid social campaigns in China for international brands. Platform rules and prices change often; figures from third-party sources are labelled and linked, and should be checked against the platforms' current terms before you budget.

The Short Answer

  • Three platforms matter most for most foreign brands: Douyin (ads via Ocean Engine), Rednote (ads via Juguang) and WeChat (ads via Tencent Ads).
  • Foreign companies can advertise, but which industries qualify, which documents are needed and how payment works differ by platform — and regulated categories such as healthcare face much stricter rules.
  • Ads perform better from credible accounts. An account with no recent, useful content makes paid traffic less convincing and can make reviews harder.
  • Compliance is part of the creative. China's Advertising Law bans absolute claims such as "best" or "No. 1", and health or medical claims need approvals. Most rejections are avoidable.
  • Plan paid social with search. Users who see an ad often search for the brand afterwards — on the same platform, on Baidu or in an AI assistant.

Where Paid Social Fits in China's Search Landscape

In China, social platforms are also search engines. A 2024 poll by Nanjing Marketing Group found that 42% of searches happen on social, video and community platforms — almost as many as in classic web search engines (44%). People go to Rednote for purchase research, to Douyin for discovery and to WeChat for trusted, private communication.

That changes what paid social is for. Ads create attention, but the decision often happens later, when the user searches for your brand. What they find then — your account, creator posts, reviews, your website, AI answers — decides whether the ad money turns into a customer. Our Chinese GEO guide explains how that last step works in Chinese AI assistants.

Douyin Ads for Foreign Companies

Rules change often — check the current requirements for your industry before planning.

Business licence
According to Ocean Engine, non-Chinese business licences are now accepted for account registration. A photographed or scanned original licence is required; where there is no company seal, signatures of the legal representative or management are used.
Eligible industries
According to AppInChina, accounts with a non-Chinese licence are approved as standard for cross-border e-commerce, and case by case for overseas tourism, government and cultural promotion, and education.
Review time
Account approval typically takes 2 to 3 business days (Ocean Engine).
Costs
There is no public rate card. AppInChina reports CPMs of roughly RMB 20 to 60 — treat this as a direction, not a quote.

Rednote Advertising

Rednote Ad Products

Feed ads
Sponsored notes in the discovery feed that look like regular posts
Search ads
Ads in Rednote search — important because many users research purchases there
Pugongying
Rednote's platform for paid creator collaborations with KOLs and KOCs; according to WSD Social, paid collaborations outside Pugongying are prohibited
Boosting creator notes
Well-performing collaboration notes can be amplified with paid traffic

Rednote Ads for Foreign Companies

Verified professional account
Advertisers need a verified business account. WSD Social reports a verification fee of RMB 600 and documents including business licence, trademark certificate and legal representative ID.
Trademark chain
According to a 2026 Juguang walkthrough, advertisers need authorisation letters forming an unbroken chain from the trademark holder to the advertiser; a distributor agreement alone is rejected.
First top-up
The same source reports a platform first-recharge floor of around RMB 5,000, with agency cross-border packages typically at RMB 10,000 to 20,000; payment goes through licensed processors or official resellers.
Review time
Account opening 1 to 3 working days with complete documents; creatives usually within hours; campaigns about one working day (as reported for 2026).
Common rejections
Absolute claims, implied medical or therapeutic effects and missing category credentials. Health and cosmeceutical brands face stricter demands.

WeChat Advertising

WeChat Ad Placements

Moments ads
Image, video and card ads in the Moments feed
Official Account ads
Placements in and below articles of WeChat Official Accounts
Channels
Video ads in WeChat Channels, WeChat's short-video feed
Search
Ads in WeChat search
Mini Programs
Ads inside Mini Programs, and ads that lead into a brand's Mini Program for bookings, leads or sales

WeChat Ads for Foreign Companies

Eligible advertisers
According to Digital Crew, overseas advertisers can advertise in industries such as tourism, cosmetics, food, sports and outdoor, automotive, software, fashion and industrial engineering — as companies only, not as individuals.
Restricted categories
Healthcare and real estate are restricted; financial services and education come with special conditions.
Budget reference points
Tencent Ads reference figures cited by Digital Crew: auction campaigns with CPMs from RMB 30 and a minimum daily budget of RMB 1,000; scheduled CPM campaigns from RMB 50,000 total budget.
Documents
Industry, trademark and authorisation documents; claims about sales or rankings need proof from an authoritative organisation.

Account Foundations: Why Ads Fail from Empty Accounts

The most common reason paid social underperforms in China is not the ad — it is the account behind it. When a user clicks on the brand name after seeing an ad, they land on the account. If the last post is months old, or there are only a few ads and no useful content, the brand looks inactive or untrustworthy. Many users then search elsewhere — and find competitors, resellers or complaints instead.

Accounts also carry weight with the platforms. Verified, active accounts with a history of compliant content tend to have fewer problems in review and more options, such as organic distribution of boosted posts.

This does not require viral content. Jademond keeps client accounts credible with regular informational posts — products, applications, answers to common questions, company news — so that every ad leads to an account that looks alive and answers the next question. The paid campaign then does the work of reaching people.

What a Credible Account Has

Verification
A verified business account with a complete profile, in Chinese
Regular posts
Useful informational content at a steady rhythm — not only ads
Answers
Replies to comments and messages, in Chinese, within a reasonable time
Consistency
The same brand name, product names and facts as on your Chinese website, marketplace stores and Baidu
Next steps
A clear path to act: a Mini Program, lead form, store or contact

Compliance: Getting Ads Approved

All paid social ads in China fall under the PRC Advertising Law and each platform's own rules. Reviews are strict, and a rejection costs time — especially at the start of a campaign or around sales events. A few rules cause most problems:

  • No absolute claims: words such as "best", "No. 1", "top" or "highest" — in Chinese and English — are banned.
  • No unapproved health claims: medical devices, medicines, health food and supplements need the right registrations and approved wording. Implied effects count too.
  • Documents must match: business licence, trademark and authorisation chain must connect to the advertiser's account.
  • Sensitive content: maps, flags, political references and some words can lead to rejection or worse. Check copy with our sensitivity check tool before submitting.
  • Chinese quality: machine-translated copy fails with users even when it passes review. Every ad and landing page should pass native Chinese QA.

Which Platforms for Which Industry

A Practitioner's View by Vertical

Based on Jademond's campaign experience; every brand's mix depends on its audience, budget and regulatory category.

Industrial B2B
WeChat (Official Account, Search, Moments targeting professionals) and Douyin search for technical topics, combined with Baidu. Paid social supports awareness and retargeting; leads often close via WeChat or the website.
Life science and medical instruments (B2B)
Strict rules for medical content. WeChat and professional content formats work best; every claim needs checking against registrations.
UK education and services for Chinese students
Rednote for research by students and parents, WeChat for trust and consultations; timing around application and enrolment seasons matters.
International schools in China
WeChat for parent communities and events, Rednote for reviews and school comparisons.
Cross-border consumer goods such as supplements
Douyin with Qianchuan and livestreaming, Rednote with creator collaborations, connected to Tmall Global, JD Worldwide or Douyin Shop. Health claims must follow the rules for the product's category.

Budgets and Measurement

No platform publishes a universal rate card, and costs vary by industry, audience, format and season — around sales events such as 618 or Double 11, prices rise sharply. Minimum top-ups and daily budgets set a floor, but a meaningful test usually needs enough budget per platform to get past the first learning phase and compare creatives.

Measurement works best inside each platform's closed loop: lead forms, Mini Programs, in-app stores and WeChat follows. Tracking a click through to a website outside China is harder, especially if the website is slow in China. Track brand searches on the platforms and on Baidu as well — they often show the effect of paid social better than last-click numbers.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Running ads from accounts with no recent content
  • Reusing Western creatives and copy with translation only
  • Paying Rednote creators outside Pugongying
  • Buying followers, likes or fake reviews — platforms detect and penalise them
  • Sending traffic to English-only or slow-loading websites
  • Ignoring how the brand looks in Baidu and AI answers when users search after seeing an ad

Choosing a Partner

Most foreign brands work with an agency for account setup, payment, compliance review and campaign management. No. Ads need a credible account behind them — verified, active and informative. Regular informational posts are enough; the paid campaign creates the reach.
