How Chinese Numbers Work: 万 and 亿
English groups digits in threes: thousand, million, billion. Chinese groups them in fours: 万 (wàn) = 10,000 and 亿 (yì) = 100,000,000. A million is therefore "one hundred ten-thousands" — 一百万 — and a billion is "ten hundred-millions" — 十亿.
| Chinese | Number | English |
|---|---|---|
| 一万 · 1万 | 10,000 | ten thousand |
| 十万 · 10万 | 100,000 | one hundred thousand |
| 一百万 · 100万 | 1,000,000 | one million |
| 一千万 · 1000万 | 10,000,000 | ten million |
| 一亿 · 1亿 | 100,000,000 | one hundred million |
| 十亿 · 10亿 | 1,000,000,000 | one billion |
| 一百亿 · 100亿 | 10,000,000,000 | ten billion |
| 一千亿 · 1000亿 | 100,000,000,000 | one hundred billion |
| 一万亿 · 1万亿 | 1,000,000,000,000 | one trillion |
Chinese marketing copy uses these units everywhere: a WeChat article with "10万+" reads has been read more than 100,000 times (the counter stops showing exact numbers there), a platform with "7亿用户" has 700 million users, and online "w" often stands in for 万 — "10w+" means the same as 10万+.
Financial Numerals (大写) for Invoices and Contracts
The simple numerals 一, 二 and 三 are easy to alter — add a stroke and one becomes two. For money, Chinese uses complex "capital" numerals that can't be changed unnoticed: 零 壹 贰 叁 肆 伍 陆 柒 捌 玖 拾 佰 仟 万 亿. They are required on cheques, bank and payment forms, and common on receipts, quotations and contracts.
- Start with 人民币 and end with 元整 for whole amounts: ¥100 → 人民币壹佰元整.
- Write 壹拾, not 拾, at the start: ¥10 → 壹拾元整, so nothing can be added in front.
- Zeros in the middle become one 零: ¥1,005 → 壹仟零伍元整; ¥10.05 → 壹拾元零伍分.
- 角 and 分 are tenths and hundredths of a yuan: ¥1,409.50 → 壹仟肆佰零玖元伍角.
The converter applies these rules automatically and rounds to the nearest 分. For legal and banking documents, check the specific requirements of the bank or authority involved.
How to Use the Chinese Number Converter
- Type a number — 12345.67, 12,345.67, 1.2万, 3.5亿, 10w+ or full-width digits all work.
- Or type Chinese numerals — 三亿五千万, 两千, 二〇二六 or a financial amount like 壹仟肆佰零玖元伍角. The converter detects the direction.
- Copy the form you need — everyday numerals, financial numerals, the RMB amount, or the 万/亿 short form.
- Need Traditional characters? Tick the option for 萬, 億 and 貳 as used in Taiwan and Hong Kong.
Numbers in Chinese Copy: Checklist
Numbers are the part of a translation that nobody on the English side reads twice. These checks catch the expensive mistakes.
-
Check every million and billion
1 million = 100万, 1 billion = 10亿. "Billion" translated as 亿 shrinks a figure tenfold — a classic error in press releases and investor material.
-
Use 万 and 亿 for large figures
"1,000,000 users" reads awkwardly in Chinese. Write 100万用户 — that is how Chinese readers see and say large numbers.
-
Keep prices in Arabic digits
¥199 or 199元 on websites, ads and product pages. Chinese numerals are for amounts written out in words, not for price tags.
-
Use financial numerals on documents
Quotations, receipts and contracts state the amount in 大写 next to the figure: 人民币壹万贰仟元整 (¥12,000.00).
-
Write dates the Chinese way
2026年10月21日 — year, month, day. Avoid 10/21/2026 or 21.10.2026, which Chinese readers can misread.
-
Don't mix full-width and half-width digits
Input methods sometimes produce full-width digits (123) that look slightly off and break search and sorting. Full-width converter →

Frequently Asked Questions
-
1 million is 一百万 (yì bǎi wàn), literally "one hundred ten-thousands", often written 100万. Chinese groups large numbers in units of 10,000 (万) and 100,000,000 (亿), not in thousands and millions.
-
1 billion is 十亿 (shí yì), or 10亿. A common translation mistake is to write 1亿 for "1 billion" — but 1亿 is only 100 million, so the figure ends up ten times too small.
-
万 (wàn) means 10,000. 1万 = 10,000, 10万 = 100,000, 100万 = 1,000,000. Online, 万 is often abbreviated as "w": "10w+" means more than 100,000.
-
亿 (yì) means 100,000,000 — one hundred million. 10亿 = 1 billion, 1万亿 = 1 trillion. Platform statistics such as "7亿用户" (700 million users) use it constantly.
-
Financial numerals are complex forms of the digits — 壹贰叁肆伍陆柒捌玖拾佰仟 instead of 一二三四五六七八九十百千. They can't easily be altered (一 cannot be turned into 二 or 三), so they are required on cheques, bank forms, receipts and contracts.
-
Write 人民币 followed by the amount in financial numerals, ending with 元整 for whole amounts. For example, ¥1,409.50 is 人民币壹仟肆佰零玖元伍角 and ¥100 is 人民币壹佰元整. If the 角 position is zero but 分 is not, write 零: ¥10.05 is 人民币壹拾元零伍分.
-
二 is used for the digit two in counting, in the tens position (二十) and in numbers read digit by digit. 两 is used before measure words and often before 百, 千, 万 and 亿 in speech (两千, 两万). Both 二千 and 两千 are correct for 2,000.
-
It depends where. In Taiwan, 兆 is the standard word for 10¹² (trillion). In mainland China, 兆 is mostly used for "mega" (兆字节, megabyte), and 10¹² is written 万亿. To avoid confusion in mainland texts, use 万亿.
