Issues
- Full-width letters and digits 1fixed below
Latin letters, digits and symbols like % should be half-width (ABC 123 %), even in Chinese text. Full-width ones (ABC123) look odd and are not found by search.

After a Chinese character, use full-width punctuation: ,。:;!? — not , . : ; ! ? Half-width marks in Chinese sentences are the most common sign of copied or machine-processed text.

Chinese Punctuation at a Glance
Chinese punctuation is full-width: each mark takes the space of one Chinese character. The rules come from China's national standard GB/T 15834; Taiwan and Hong Kong follow the same principles with their own quotation marks.

Spaces Between Chinese and English: Two Valid Styles
Whether to put a space between Chinese and Latin letters or numbers is a style choice, not a rule. Many tech brands and modern Chinese websites write 支持 iPhone 和 Android — the spacing makes mixed text easier to scan. Newspapers, government sites and many corporate websites write 支持iPhone和Android. Both are correct.
What looks wrong is mixing them in one text — typical when copy comes from several writers, a translation agency and a CMS editor. The checker's default setting finds the style your text mostly uses and marks the exceptions. Spaces are never right between Chinese characters or next to full-width punctuation.
Where These Mistakes Come From
- Machine translation and AI. English punctuation is carried over: commas, straight quotes, three dots.
- Western keyboards and CMS editors. Typing Chinese into a template built for English, or editing text on a laptop without a Chinese input method.
- Copy-paste from Word, PDFs and WeChat. Brings invisible characters, full-width spaces and Japanese-style marks.
- Sources from Taiwan, Hong Kong or Japan. Corner-bracket quotes, Traditional characters or kana in a text for mainland readers.
Chinese Web Copy: Typography Checklist
Give this list to your translator, agency or web team. It covers the issues we see most often on Western companies' Chinese websites.
-
Full-width punctuation in every Chinese sentence
,。:;!?() — also in headings, buttons, form labels and image text, not only in body copy.
-
The right quotation marks for the market
“” for mainland China, 「」 for Taiwan and Hong Kong. Never straight quotes.
-
One spacing style for Chinese and English
Decide once — with or without spaces around Latin words and numbers — and write it into your style guide.
-
Simplified characters only for the mainland
No Traditional characters, no Japanese kana. Convert Traditional to Simplified →
-
Clean pasted text
Remove invisible characters and full-width spaces before text goes into the CMS. Indents belong in CSS.
-
Use a Chinese font stack
Full-width punctuation only looks right in a Chinese font. Without one, browsers fall back to fonts that place marks oddly. Generate a Chinese font stack →
-
Let a native speaker review the final page
A checker catches typography. Tone, terminology and claims need a person — on the live page, not only in the document.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
It finds the typical mistakes in Chinese web copy: half-width punctuation (, . ! ?) in Chinese sentences, straight quotes, wrong ellipsis and dash, full-width letters and digits, spaces inside Chinese text, invisible characters, Japanese characters, Traditional characters in Simplified text, and inconsistent spacing between Chinese and English. Most issues are fixed automatically in a corrected version you can copy.
-
Full-width marks: ,。、;:!? for sentences, “” and ‘’ for quotes in mainland China (「」 and 『』 in Taiwan and Hong Kong), () for brackets, 《》 for titles of books and films, …… for the ellipsis and —— for the dash. They are defined in China's national standard GB/T 15834.
-
Both styles are common. Many tech companies and modern websites add a space (支持 iPhone 和 Android); newspapers, government sites and many companies don't (支持iPhone和Android). What matters is consistency. By default the checker detects which style your text mostly uses and flags the exceptions — or you choose a style.
-
Half-width commas and full stops in a Chinese sentence look careless to native readers and are a typical sign of machine translation or text assembled by non-Chinese teams. They also change how text wraps and can affect how search engines split sentences. For brands, they quickly signal "foreign company without a Chinese team".
-
The biggest visible difference is quotation marks: mainland China uses “” and ‘’, Taiwan and Hong Kong use 「」 and 『』. Traditional Chinese typesetting also centres punctuation like ,and 。 in the character box. Choose the right standard for your audience — and make sure your text uses Simplified characters for the mainland.
-
No. Web addresses, e-mail addresses and text in `backticks` are protected and left exactly as they are. The checker only adds spaces around them if your text uses spaces between Chinese and Latin text.

No — it checks typography: punctuation, spacing and character forms. For wording, a native Chinese editor is still needed. Use our other tools for related checks, such as the Advertising Law checker for banned claims in ads.
