Education Marketing Experts Who Understand Schools and Families

Chinese families trust information that is specific, consistent and written for them. Our education team combines Chinese search, social media and school experience. Marcus Pentzek leads our education projects. He is a parent at an international school, active in its parent-teacher organisation and a regular school-trip chaperone, and he trained in Germany as a state-recognised educator (Staatlich anerkannter Erzieher) before moving into digital marketing more than 20 years ago. Peiwen Peng runs social media for all of our education clients, from WeChat and Rednote to Douyin.
Chinese students and parents research in Chinese, compare many sources and trust the ones that agree with each other.
We plan Baidu and Google together, so one website strategy works for both audiences. We also plan for Chinese AI assistants, because more families now ask them for a shortlist before they ever visit a website.

The Market Today

Recruiting Chinese Students Is Harder and More Competitive

Chinese students remain one of the largest international groups, but the market is shifting. Visibility, trust and a clear value story now decide which institutions families shortlist.
๐Ÿ“‰ Fewer students, more competition

China's Ministry of Education reports about 570,000 students abroad in 2025, compared with 703,500 in 2019. Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany and other destinations are gaining.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Tighter family budgets

The average Chinese study-abroad budget is about 600,000 RMB, and families look for a clear return on every pound, dollar or euro.

๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ผ Agents shape the decision

In a 2023 BSA survey of 943 Chinese parents, agents were the most used information source for UK independent schools. You need to reach families and agents.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ Chinese-language information comes first

Students and parents look for Chinese sources first, and compare Baidu, Zhihu, WeChat, Rednote and official websites before they trust a claim.

๐Ÿค– AI assistants are joining the journey

Chinese AI tools such as Doubao, DeepSeek and ERNIE increasingly answer questions about destinations, universities and services.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Trust and rules

Exaggerated claims, minors in advertising and platform requirements can harm both reputation and campaigns, so every programme starts with the rules.

Reach Families Directly

Many Chinese families want to speak to the institution itself. A Chinese website, accurate presence on Baidu and Baidu Baike, and helpful content on WeChat, Rednote and Zhihu let them research you without a middleman. Direct visibility also protects your brand: families see your own facts, not only what third parties say about you.

And Support Your Agent Partners

  • Agents remain a main information source for many Chinese families
  • Give agents clear Chinese-language materials, fees, deadlines and entry requirements
  • Make sure agents and families see the same facts
  • Track enquiries from both direct and agent routes
  • Build a pipeline that does not depend on a single channel

Results from Practice

Case Study: UK University Building a Direct Chinese Pipeline

A UK university had strong agent relationships in China but little visibility with students and parents researching on their own. We launched a Chinese-language website section that loads reliably in Mainland China, optimised programme pages for Baidu and ran Baidu Ads around application deadlines. Our social media team added WeChat and Rednote content for prospective students and parents, answering the questions families ask most. Agents received the same Chinese-language information, so every route told the same story. The university now receives a growing share of its Chinese enquiries directly, alongside its existing agent network.

Case Study: Student Accommodation Provider Helping Students Find a Home Abroad

A student accommodation provider with properties in the UK, Europe, the USA and Canada wanted Chinese students to find and book a home before they travel. We built Chinese-language city and property content, optimised it for Baidu searches and created a Rednote and WeChat programme with practical advice on neighbourhoods, room types and moving in. Because students ask many questions before they book, we helped the provider answer them in Chinese on the channels students already use.

What Changed

  • Chinese-language pages for destination cities and properties
  • Higher visibility for Chinese searches about student housing abroad
  • Rednote and WeChat content that answers practical questions
  • More enquiries and bookings from students in China

Case Study: Insurance Provider for Students Studying Abroad

An insurance company that serves international students needed Chinese families to understand which cover is required and which is recommended when studying overseas. Health insurance, for example, is a must-have for many destinations, while other cover is optional but advisable. We created Chinese-language explainer content for each destination, organised around the questions students and parents ask before departure. We optimised these pages for Baidu, distributed them on WeChat and Rednote and made sure Chinese AI assistants find clear, consistent information. The provider is now easier to find for Chinese families who start their insurance research early.

Case Study: British Guardianship Provider for Chinese Families

A British guardianship provider wanted to reach Chinese parents whose children attend UK boarding schools. Many parents have never heard of guardianship, so we built a Chinese-language information hub explaining what a guardian does, why schools require one and how to choose a trustworthy provider. We supported it with Baidu SEO, WeChat content for parents and information designed for education agents. All content addresses parents, not children.

What Changed

  • A Chinese website section that explains guardianship clearly
  • Visibility for searches by parents researching UK boarding schools
  • WeChat content that builds trust with parents
  • Agent-ready information that makes referrals easier

FAQ

Recruiting Chinese Students: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions universities, schools and student services ask us most often about reaching Chinese students and families.
How can universities and schools reach Chinese students directly?
Be visible where Chinese families research: Baidu, WeChat, Rednote, Zhihu and Chinese AI assistants. A Chinese website, helpful content and accurate reference entries let families learn about you without waiting for an agent.
Do we still need education agents in China?
For many institutions, yes. In a 2023 survey of Chinese parents by BSA and Connexcel, agents were the top information source for UK independent schools. The strongest approach combines direct visibility with clear information for agents.
Do we need a Chinese website?
A Chinese-language website or section is strongly recommended, because families look for Chinese information first. It should load reliably in Mainland China, but it does not necessarily need an ICP licence if it is hosted outside the Mainland.
Which platforms matter most for reaching Chinese students?
Baidu, WeChat, Zhihu and your own Chinese website matter most for research, while Rednote, Douyin and Bilibili support discovery and trust. The right mix depends on your audience and programmes.
What is GEO and why does it matter for study abroad?
GEO (generative engine optimization) makes sure AI assistants such as Doubao, DeepSeek and ERNIE find and describe your institution correctly. Families increasingly ask these tools which universities, schools or services to consider.
Are there rules for marketing schools and children in China?
Yes. Advertising in China is regulated, and rules on education and on minors in advertising can limit what you may say or show. We check the current rules for each platform before a campaign starts.
Can insurance, housing and guardianship providers market to Chinese students?
Yes. Students and parents search for housing, insurance and guardianship long before they travel, and clear Chinese-language information helps them choose confidently. We design campaigns around the advertising rules that apply to your service.
How do you measure results?
We track visits, enquiries, applications and bookings from each Chinese channel and report them clearly. Because decision cycles are long, we look at the full journey from first search to enrolment, not only at clicks.
