Xiaomi: What Is It?

Xiaomi is a Chinese consumer electronics and technology company headquartered in Beijing. It designs and sells smartphones (under the Xiaomi and Redmi brands), tablets, laptops, wearables, and a broad range of smart-home and IoT hardware, and it operates an internet-services business that includes advertising and value-added services layered on top of its device ecosystem.

In March 2024, Xiaomi entered the electric vehicle market with the SU7 sedan, followed by the YU7 SUV, produced through its subsidiary Xiaomi Auto. Xiaomi also designs some of its own silicon: the Xuanjie O1 (玄戒O1), announced in May 2025, is a 3-nanometer flagship system-on-chip that uses licensed Arm CPU and GPU core IP combined with Xiaomi-designed system integration, image-signal-processing, and NPU components. Xiaomi has stated it will begin overseas vehicle deliveries starting in Europe in 2027.

Xiaomi's primary audience spans budget-to-midrange smartphone buyers (largely served by the Redmi brand), premium smartphone buyers (the numbered Xiaomi series and Xiaomi Ultra line, several of which use Leica-branded optics), smart-home adopters using the Mi Home/Xiaomi Home app ecosystem, and, since 2024, buyers of Xiaomi-branded electric vehicles in mainland China.

Xiaomi: Disambiguation

Xiaomi should not be confused with the following entities:

Xiao-i (小i机器人 / Xiao-I Corporation)
A separate Chinese artificial-intelligence company founded in 2001, headquartered in Shanghai and listed on Nasdaq as AIXI. It has no ownership relationship with Xiaomi Corporation; the similarity is limited to the "Xiao" prefix in the name.
MIJIA (米家)
A Xiaomi-owned smart-home product line manufactured directly by Xiaomi, distinct from the broader "Xiaomi Smart Home" / Mi Ecosystem category, which includes third-party manufacturers that partner with Xiaomi but are not owned by it.
Kingsoft (金山软件)
A separate, older Chinese software company also chaired at various points by Xiaomi founder Lei Jun. Kingsoft and Xiaomi are related through Lei Jun's personal involvement but are separate publicly listed companies.
Xiaomi EV / Xiaomi Auto vs. Xiaomi Corporation
Xiaomi Auto (referred to in press coverage as "Xiaomi EV") is a business segment and subsidiary structure within Xiaomi Corporation, not a separately listed company.

A common misconception is that "Xiaomi" translates directly to a company slogan; in fact, Xiaomi (小米) is the Chinese word for "millet," and the company's own materials describe "MI" in its logo as standing for "Mobile Internet," while some company communications have also described it informally as referencing "Mission Impossible" in reference to the company's early challenges. Another recurring point of confusion involves Xiaomi's 2021 inclusion on a US Department of Defense list of alleged "Communist Chinese military companies"; Xiaomi contested this designation in US federal court, and the designation was formally vacated by a final judgment of the US District Court for the District of Columbia on May 25, 2021.
