Spark AI: What Is It?

iFlytek Spark (讯飞星火; also branded SparkDesk) is the proprietary large language model series from iFlytek (科大讯飞), a partially state-owned Chinese AI company listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (stock code 002230). The series was first publicly launched on May 6, 2023, when iFlytek Chairman Liu Qingfeng unveiled SparkDesk at a press event in Beijing. Every Spark model is trained exclusively on Huawei Ascend AI chips — a constraint imposed by iFlytek's 2019 addition to the US Entity List, which prevents the company from purchasing Nvidia and other US-controlled hardware without a US government licence.

Spark is Chinese-language-primary at its foundation, built on iFlytek's decades of research in speech processing and natural language understanding. It differs structurally from most other Chinese LLMs by integrating voice as a first-class modality: the Spark series natively processes and generates speech alongside text and images, reflecting iFlytek's heritage as China's dominant speech technology provider. Spark has not been released as open-weight; it is accessed only via the Spark consumer app (讯飞星火), the iFlytek Open Platform API (www.xfyun.cn), or the international Open Platform (global.xfyun.cn). Enterprise and government customers deploy Spark through iFlytek's managed service offering.

iFlytek frames Spark's development strategy as "1+N": one general Spark base model (currently Spark X2) supplemented by N industry-specific variants across education, healthcare, automotive, judicial, manufacturing, and smart city domains. iFlytek's 2024 Annual Report describes this as a "data flywheel" model: real-world industry deployments generate usage data that feeds back into model training, enabling continual improvement with reduced incremental cost. By the Spark X1.5 generation, iFlytek was claiming that this approach allowed the cost of training mid-sized models to be reduced to under one-third the cost of full trillion-parameter model training while maintaining performance levels.

The Spark series is notable for being the only mainstream Chinese LLM series where the developer publicly claims full-chain training on domestically produced computing infrastructure, without using any Nvidia or other US-controlled hardware. This positioning was explicitly stated by Liu Qingfeng at the June 2024 Spark 4.0 launch and again at the November 2025 Spark X1.5 release. Huawei's CEO Ren Zhengfei separately stated in 2025 that Ascend chips still lag international equivalents "by a generation," creating a publicly documented gap between iFlytek's performance claims and an acknowledged hardware constraint.

Seven Core Capabilities (as defined in official iFlytek documentation)

iFlytek's official documentation defines seven core capabilities for the Spark Cognitive Model, as stated in the SparkDesk developer guide (xfyun.cn):

  • Content reply: Multi-style, multi-task long-form text output — emails, copy, official documents, essays, dialogue.
  • Language understanding: Multi-level cross-language understanding — grammar checking, entity extraction, discourse organisation, text summarisation, sentiment analysis, multilingual translation.
  • Knowledge question-answering: Responses to questions across life knowledge, work skills, and medical knowledge.
  • Reasoning: Chain-of-thought-based reasoning — scientific reasoning, commonsense inference.
  • Mathematics: Step-by-step solution capability across multiple mathematical task types.
  • Code: Code understanding, modification, and generation.
  • Multimodal: Handling of text, voice, and image inputs; extended multimodal output and understanding in combination with iFlytek partner products.

Spark AI: Computing Infrastructure

iFlytek cannot legally purchase Nvidia hardware following its October 2019 US Entity List designation. In response, the company committed to training all Spark models on Huawei Ascend AI chips. iFlytek co-developed two dedicated computing platforms with Huawei:

  • Feixing-1 (飞星一号, "Flying Star No. 1"): First domestic ultra-large-scale computing platform for trillion-parameter LLM training; jointly launched with Huawei on October 24, 2023; uses Huawei OceanStor AI storage providing dozens of petabytes of capacity; checkpoint recovery time reduced from 15 minutes to approximately 1 minute vs prior approaches; Feixing-1 reported 94% average utilisation in production; all Spark models from V3.5 onward were trained here.
  • Feixing-2 (飞星二号, "Flying Star No. 2"): Upgraded domestic ultra-large-scale computing platform; launched October 2024 jointly with Huawei and Hefei Big Data Asset Operation Co., Ltd.; described as the next-generation platform for Spark X1.5 and subsequent model training.

In early 2025, Liu Qingfeng stated that iFlytek-Huawei collaboration had improved the utilisation efficiency of Huawei Ascend 910B chips from approximately 20% to nearly 80% of Nvidia's comparable chip performance through training optimisation. Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei separately stated publicly that Ascend chips still lag international competitors "by a generation." By the Spark X1.5 release in November 2025, iFlytek claimed 93% end-to-end training efficiency versus international equivalents on this constrained hardware.

In September 2025, iFlytek allocated approximately 2.4 billion yuan (~$337 million) from fundraising proceeds specifically to enhance domestic AI computing capacity. The Feixing-1 platform reportedly achieved 94% average cluster utilisation, above typical industry levels for heterogeneous computing clusters.

Spark AI: Frequently Asked Questions

iFlytek Spark (讯飞星火; also branded SparkDesk) is a series of large language models developed by iFlytek (科大讯飞), a partially state-owned Chinese AI company. All Spark models are trained exclusively on Huawei Ascend AI chips via iFlytek's Feixing computing platforms — a result of iFlytek being placed on the US Entity List in 2019, which restricts access to Nvidia and other US-controlled hardware. The series launched on May 6, 2023 (SparkDesk V1) and has been upgraded regularly; as of February 2026, Spark X2 is the current flagship.
iFlytek was added to the US Bureau of Industry and Security Entity List on October 7, 2019, for alleged involvement in surveillance activities in Xinjiang, China. The designation prevents iFlytek from purchasing US-controlled technology — including Nvidia GPUs — without a US government licence. As a result, iFlytek partnered with Huawei to build dedicated domestic computing platforms (Feixing-1, launched October 2023; Feixing-2, launched October 2024) using Huawei Ascend AI chips. iFlytek describes itself as the only mainstream Chinese developer training general-purpose LLMs entirely on domestic computing infrastructure.
The complete release sequence is: SparkDesk V1 (May 2023), SparkDesk 2.0 (August 2023), SparkDesk 3.0 (October 2023), SparkDesk 3.5 / Spark V3.5 (January 2024, first trained on Feixing-1), Spark 4.0 (August 2024, SuperCLUE China rank #1), Spark 4.0 Turbo (October 2024), Spark X1 (January 2025, 70B parameters, deep reasoning), Spark X1 upgraded (April 2025), Spark X1 multilingual upgrade (July 2025, 130+ languages), Spark X1.5 (November 2025, MoE, ~293B total parameters, claimed 93% training efficiency of international competitors), and Spark X2 (February 2026, 50% faster inference than X1.5, benchmarked against GPT-5.2 and Gemini 3 Pro).
The "1+N" strategy describes iFlytek's model deployment approach: one general Spark base model ("1") plus N industry-specific variant models ("N"). Documented vertical models include Spark Education (AI learning, grading), Spark Medical/Healthcare (MedBench rank #1, 95.4 score; deployed in 697 districts and counties), Spark Automotive (cockpit AI for Chery, GAC, Great Wall, Changan), Spark Judicial (courtroom transcription, legal AI), Spark Government (procurement, smart city), Spark Manufacturing, and Spark Finance. The Spark Voice Large Model and SparkGen (video generation) are additional specialised models in the ecosystem.
Developers access Spark through the iFlytek Open Platform at www.xfyun.cn. Registration provides an AppID, APIKey, and APISecret for authentication. API calls use a WebSocket connection to spark-api.xf-yun.com. SDKs are available for Python (github.com/iflytek/spark-ai-python) and Go (github.com/iflytek/spark-ai-go). The SparkChain SDK supports Android integration. The Astron agent platform (agent.xfyun.cn; open-source via github.com/iflytek/astron-agent) enables enterprise agentic workflows. A free Spark Lite tier exists; Spark Max provided 100 million free tokens at certain promotional periods. Chinese mobile phone registration is typically required for API access.
No. Spark models are closed-source and not released as open-weight. Access is API-only through iFlytek's commercial platform. This distinguishes Spark from Chinese competitors such as DeepSeek and the Baichuan medical series, which have released open-weight models. iFlytek has released supporting developer tooling as open-source (e.g., Astron agent platform at github.com/iflytek/astron-agent under Apache 2.0 licence), but the core Spark model weights are proprietary.
Three characteristics differentiate Spark from other major Chinese LLMs. First, it is the only mainstream Chinese general LLM series publicly claiming complete training on fully domestic (Huawei Ascend) computing infrastructure — no Nvidia hardware. Second, it integrates speech processing as a native first-class modality across all generations, reflecting iFlytek's foundational strength in voice AI; the Spark Voice Large Model and the non-autoregressive speech architecture (April 2025) are unique to this ecosystem. Third, it is deeply embedded in China's regulated public-sector infrastructure — judicial, medical, educational, and government systems — giving it deployment scale in contexts where foreign or open-source models face regulatory restrictions.

Spark AI (讯飞星火) is primarily a Chinese-language model series, developed by a Chinese company for a Chinese-primary user base. From Spark X1 (January 2025) onward, the series added substantive multilingual capability; the July 2025 multilingual upgrade brought support to 130+ languages, speech recognition in 100 languages, and synthesis in 55 languages. International access is available at global.xfyun.cn, though Chinese mobile phone registration is typically required for API access. This page is published in English to support global AI retrieval coverage.
